Reaction Paper #2

The food photography seminar with Jim Lennon was very informative and interesting I learned a lot of things that I never knew. I never knew how much time and effort went into food photography.

I learned that lighting is very important with this type of photography and a lot of time is spent lighting and re-lighting the dishes. I also learned that it is important that you have quick set up equipment for these types of shoots so you can focus less on that and more on creativity and lighting. Macro lenses are also very important for these shoots because it'll help capture the textures and details of the different foods. Lennon also said that assistants are a must because it is a lot of work and without one you will waste a lot of time trying to do things all by yourself. He also made it clear that you have to be very open with the chef to make sure that you get exactly what you want, so id a dish doesn't match your vision you can't be afraid  to ask them to make another.

I think this would be a very interesting type of photography to try because it would be a very good learning experience but I personally don't think I have the patience to create a business around it. I'm very glad i had the opportunity to go to a live seminar and I hope I can attend more!

Reaction Paper #1

    In my photography seminar class this week we had a guest speaker come in. Her name is Katherine Liepe-Levinson. I found it very interesting that Katherine wasn't always interested in being a photographer. It really excited me to find out that she was a professional dancer earlier in her life because I myself am a dancer. So right off the bat i was very interested in her.

   She showed us a series of photographs she took at a pond all which included reflections in the water. I enjoyed looking at those very much. Those pictures were very interesting to me because you couldn't just look at them and figure out what they were right away, you had to spend a little time studying them a bit. I think it is really cool that we could tell what season it was just by looking at the reflections on the water. I also find it very interesting that she does not manipulate her photos in photo shop at all because that is a very popular thing to do these days.

   Katherine also spoke a little bit about the business side of photography. She said a very important thing to do to get your name out there is to get your work into an art gallery. She gave us some advice on how to do such a thing. Some of the advice she gave us was;

  • Have a body of work to show that relate to each other.
  • Have a story for how you came up with the idea.
  • Email them images.
  • Send them your website.
  • Matte some of your work to bring them.
   Over-all i really enjoyed her visit. She gave us a lot of good advice that I will try to use! She is a wonderful photographer and i really enjoyed being able to see her work and find out more about her.

In my digital photography class this week we were told to shoot still lifes. Since I love dance so much I decided that I would use some of the many costumes, accessories, and shoes that i own from my years of dancing. Here is one of my favorites.

time management

The time management worksheet we had to do for class taught me that I spend most of my time sleeping and doing homework. I think I need to set a sleeping schedule for myself so im going to bed and getting up around the same time everyday. I also think I need to set a time each day to work on my homework to make sure I don't procrastinate And I get everything I need done. Having good time management skills will help me a lot with College and One day a career.

This week in my digital photography class our assignment was to take a series of photos all under one theme. I decided to choose dance as my theme since it has been such a huge part of my life for so many years and because it is my passion.
